Why You Should Start Your Board Cert Process Today

The deadline is near for this beneficial program.

Thinking of obtaining your board certification? The deadline is nearing. Still debating whether it’s the right step for you? Becoming board certified has many benefits for teachers. It represents the highest mark of professional accomplishment, showcases talent in the classroom and demonstrates dedication to students.

And, depending on your district, teachers who get board certified may also receive a financial incentive. With all those benefits, what’s holding you back?

The National Board gives some more details on the certification process:

Eligibility and application requirements

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree (Exception: Career and Tech Ed teachers must have met the licensure requirements for the state);

  • Have completed three full years of teaching or school counseling; and

  • Possess a valid state teaching or school counseling license (Exception: If you are teaching where a license is not required, you have taught in schools recognized and approved to operate by the state).

Available certificates

National Board Certification is available in 25 certificate areas from Pre-K through 12th grade, structured along two dimensions: the developmental level of the students and the subject area.

Certification process

The certification process is designed to collect standards-based evidence of accomplished teaching across four components:

  • Content Knowledge

  • Differentiation in Instruction

  • Teaching Practice and Learning Environment

  • Effective and Reflective Practitioner
