Teachers + Parents = Student Success
Learn why parents and teachers may be the perfect partnership.
We all know: Teachers can’t do it all. A student’s success depends on the student, the teacher and the support at home — whether parents, grandparents or an older sibling. In fact, Harvard Professor Robert Putnam said he would rather see an increase of 10 percent parent participation over a 10 percent school budget increase, according to an article from Purdue University.
In the same article, it’s determined 1 in 3 parents are not involved in their child’s school or education. However, two thirds of teachers say students would do better in school with increased parent participation.
There are a number of ways you can increase parent participation inside the classroom and out. Here are just a couple of ideas:
- Call a parent when his or her child has a great day in class.
- Keep families informed with a classroom newsletter.
- Invite parents to volunteer in a classroom activity.
- Share your contact info with parents and remind them that you welcome their questions.
- Show appreciation for parents via thank-you cards or even a simple email.
