Pop Quiz: Should You Assign Homework Over Spring Break?

We can hardly believe it: Spring break's almost here! Now about that assigned reading...

I don’t, but then, I am not a big believer in homework at all. For some intercessions I will assign optional practice.

Creative assignments are a great way of keeping students actively aware and engaged in learning. Homework doesn’t have to be assigned, but encouraged. I love to give students a post card with the school address and they can send me a post card. I give students a memory card, or in ancient times a disposable camera and when students return we create informational nvarchar(max)s about their vacations. Online book clubs or events like “meet me at the library.” This may not be traditional homework, but students are still engaged and accountable for the learning that occurs even during spring break.

This question brought tears to my eyes from my high school experience. I had to read "War and Peace" during my senior year during spring break. It was AWFUL! Can students be working on a long-term project during a spring break if they have time? Yes.
