More Than Free: Register for PD with the Arizona K12 Center and Code.org

The four-letter word that makes you think, “Could it be true?” Learn how you can get interactive professional development for (yes, you’re reading this right) free!

Don’t let the words “coding” or “computer science” scare you away from this incredible opportunity. In partnership with Code.org, the Arizona K12 Center is offering a one-day workshop on Feb. 1, 2018 to inspire K-5 classroom teachers, librarians, tech-ed specialists, and administrators. The free workshop aligns with Code.org’s core mission: to expand “access to computer science and increasing participation by women and underrepresented minorities.”

Whether you are a technology novice or veteran, Code.org calls upon you to provide your students with the skills they need to explore the concepts that will prepare them for the future.

According to Janice Mak, the Code.org trainer who will facilitate the event, the application of computer science to all subjects is seamless; the skills required should be used in more than coding electives or science, technology, engineering, and math courses.

“It’s problem-solving in a fun and engaging way. This professional learning is designed for everybody,” explains the Arizona State Board of Education member and Wildfire Elementary School Assistant Principal. So, come one, come all because “we, the teachers, are not the experts, but the facilitators of this important student learning.”

Since teachers are the most impactful part of the student learning equation, Code.org looks to equip educators with free resources. Not only are these tools that coincide with cloud-based technology, but also there are opportunities for “unplugged,” hands-on activities.

“Early exposure makes a big difference in the foundation of a child’s education. Participating in tasks that demand teamwork and critical-thinking skills will result in a well-rounded learner,” Mak shares.

If you’re looking to shape your students’ learning in a way that might have a lifelong influence on who they are as a student and professional, this workshop is for you. Register soon because spots for this free event are limited — materials and food provided!
