6 Ways to Vacation on a Budget

We’ve got your Arizona daytrips, tips, and deals for a sweet summer trip.

Oh, sweet summer — we’ve been looking for you! Knowing how elaborate vacations can be oh-so-pricy, we’re taking a look at some local treasures that will help you keep more of that summer check in your bank account. Whether you’re in the mood to wear flip-flops, hiking boots, or dancing shoes, take a peek at some of this season’s best Arizona retreats.

Summer break is a perfect excuse to experience some of the small-town charm Arizona has to offer. Though there are many to pick from, our favorites might be Jerome and Prescott — both full of history and charm. In Jerome, head to the ghost town’s Haunted Hamburger for lunch before exploring Gold King Mine Museum or the local art galleries. When in Prescott, seize the opportunity for a stroll or picture-perfect picnic in the stunning and historic downtown square. If you’re up for outdoor adventure, head to Lynx Lake for camping or a leisurely walk around the water.

If you’re up for a Wild West daytrip, consider heading to Tombstone. Relive our state legends with a reenactment of Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, Virgil and Morgan Earp’s gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Make a day of it by grabbing a hardhat and heading over to nearby Bisbee to tour the Queen Mine.

Looking to cut loose in high style? Surround yourself with shopping, golf, and nightlife at the W in Scottsdale. The resort offers an Arizona resident rate that includes complimentary cocktails, internet, and parking.

Get in touch with Arizona’s flora and fauna and visit Tucson’s must-see Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. Plan to spend several hours in this living museum full of wildlife, cacti, and flowers. Insider tip: Wear red to the hummingbird aviary! It’s rumored to be their favorite color.

Did someone say staycation? The JW Marriott Desert Ridge has got your family covered. Its Come to Life package includes unlimited golf for four, free kids meals, and a $50 resort credit. Or, head to Tucson’s Westin La Paloma, where you can get your third night free, a $50 resort credit, and free update. (Score!)

Thirsting for culture, but tight on cash? The Phoenix Art Museum accepts voluntary donations on Wednesdays from 3 to 9 p.m. as well as the first Friday of each month from 6 to 10 p.m. — not to mention, kids under 6 are free every day.

Grab your sunscreen and shades, and let’s explore some of our state’s gems this summer break.
