5 Reasons to Take a National Board Pre-Candidacy Class

Maybe you heard about National Board Certification in your preservice training as an undergraduate student, maybe someone came to visit you at your site, or maybe someone talked you into attending a meeting. No matter what piqued your interest, a National Board Pre-Candidacy Class puts you on the path toward certification. Here are five quick reasons to take a class.

1. To learn why National Board Certified Teachers are more effective

Since 2008, research has shown that National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) are more effective at raising student learning and achievement.

2. To build your capacity to help your students

When you take a pre-candidacy class, whether you decide to declare candidacy or not, you will purposely reshape your identity as a teaching professional.

3. To understand the requirements for achieving National Board Certification

After completing the course, you will know all of the ins and outs of achieving Board certification, from declaring candidacy to submitting your work and receiving feedback.

4. To emulate the National Board’s Five Core Propositions for Teaching

You will learn about the National Board’s Five Propositions for Teaching, the knowledge, skills, dispositions and beliefs that characterize NBCTs.

5. To engage with peers that share your passion for advancing student achievement

Whether you go through the process with other teachers from your school, complete strangers, or anything in-between, taking a National Board Pre-Candidacy Class gives you the opportunity to interact meaningfully with other professionals that share your passion for what matters most: advancing student achievement.
