These easy recognition ideas and resources can be done inside the classroom starting tomorrow.
Somewhere between the grading and designing lessons, it becomes easy to forget to recognize our students for small, but wonderful victories. Here are a few ideas that you can do tomorrow to authentically brighten someone’s day, and create a stronger rapport with each of your students.
- Recognize someone anytime you see a chance. Look for the good in everyone, and find something that makes each student extraordinary. Each week, set aside some time to let a kiddo know that you saw them compliment someone, or you really appreciate them working on their penmanship. Find something small beyond academics, and make it hugely important. (This is crucial for administrators, too!)
- Have a “Wall of Champions” and update it — regularly. The best role model is the one right next to you. Encourage everyone to make it on the wall at least once for something great.
- Remember birthdays and sing a song. Bonus points for those of you with your own birthday song. Also, do not be surprised if they sing for you on your special day.
- Inspire them. Use sticky notes and write phrases to inspire your students, and then leave it on their desk when they come in. Let them take it home, put it on their binder, use it as a book mark. They will never forget the time you let them know how important they are to you.
