If you ask your students if they can explain why something works, could they? Would you know what to listen for? Why Does It Work? will train participants how to develop mathematical arguments in their classrooms by preparing students to justify their thinking. Participants will learn how to support students to notice relationships across problems, articulate a claim about what they notice, investigate that claim, and use representations to explain why that claim is true or not.

Participants will:

  • Comprehend how to develop students’ ability to justify their thinking.
  • Learn how to teach students to notice relationships across sets of problems.
  • Understand how to support students to articulate a claim and investigate that claim to determine if it is true or not.
Additional Information:

Registration includes continental breakfast, lunch, the book, But Why Does it Work?, and other materials.
