Assessment literacy is the ability to create and use valid and reliable assessments as a classroom teacher to facilitate and communicate student learning. This professional development series includes a three-phase approach to developing assessment literacy through the creation of teacher-made assessments aligned to the Arizona College and Career Ready Standards.

In each of the three phases, professional learning will focus on developing knowledge and skills to create assessments that yield valid and reliable information about student learning. The following knowledge and skills are key to the development of assessments and will be the focus of the training for each phase:

  • Essential understandings of connections and alignment among curriculum, instruction, and assessment
  • Essential skills of unpacking the curriculum
  • Creating a table of specifications that aligns to the curriculum and create a framework
  • Using the table of specifications to critique current assessments, new assessments, and analyze student work
  • Develop assessment questions and assessment activities that are relevant and rigorous

By the end of the professional learning series, participants will have:

  • Critiqued and revised current teacher-made assessments to include traditional assessments such as teacher-made tests and performance-based assessments.
  • Administered the assessments, collected student performance data, and analyzed student learning to guide instructional decisions.
Additional Information:

Registration includes continental breakfast and lunch each day, training, materials, and a copy of the book, Teacher-Made Assessments.
