Modeling with mathematics is the practice of making sense of the world by viewing scenarios through a mathematical lens. Math Tasks in Three Acts offers the strategies to explicitly structure a lesson to connect students to real world experiences through multi-sensory applications. In this workshop, participants will explore how to create a math task in three acts, analyze and develop rubrics and planning guides, and discover several resources to implement the motivating math strategy in the classroom immediately. Learn the structure and strategies of a “three-act task” to engage and motivate your students’ mathematical mind.

This method engages students with a video or image that surrounds a mathematical feature or relationship, which fills the learner with wonder. Students will then be engaged in a mathematical question and offered opportunities to construct models representing their thinking. This is the work of modeling with mathematics, a practice identified by the Arizona College and Career Ready Standards as central work for the K-12 mathematics. Learn multiple strategies and skills to answer your students’ questions and curiosities about how math is everywhere! Come prepared to stretch your thinking with Dr. Michael Flynn at this exciting event!

Participants will:

  • Explore and analyze what goes into creating a Math Task in Three Acts.
  • Develop rubrics and planning guides for the purpose of analyzing the effectiveness of a “three-act tasks.”
  • Learn and practice, while developing a lesson structure that can be applied in the classroom based on student needs.
  • Learn the importance of revising mathematical models to more closely predict real world phenomena.
Additional Information:

Registration includes training materials, continental breakfast, and lunch.
