The Summer Math Institute presents three days of engaged learning and collaboration alongside experts in the content of mathematics. The Arizona K12 Center will feature keynote speakers each day surrounding specific topics.

During the first two days, participants will engage in grade-level and instructional coaching strands, led by knowledgeable and experienced educators from across Arizona. Facilitators will guide participants in captivating lessons, activities, and assessments to address the Arizona College and Career Ready Standards. The third day will be led by experts in the field of STEAM, literacy, music, and more, which will engage the participants in multi-curricular math experiences.

Day 1:  Instruction. Dr. Mike Flynn will focus on delivering high-quality strategies to improve instruction in math.

Day 2: Assessment. Beth Kobett, co-author of The Formative 5, will teach participants how to use quick formative assessments to measure how students are doing and impact instruction.

Day 3: Analysis. John SanGiovanni, author of Mine the Gap for Mathematical Understanding will teach participants how to analyze student performance and correct the "holes" in their student's understanding of mathematics.

Participants will:

  • Examine content standards and participate in creating relevant and intentional learning opportunities focused in critical areas and techniques.
  • Design mathematical tasks that align vertically across the standards.
  • Learn strategies to engage and intrigue students with the math they are learning, using rich problem selection and inquiry.
  • Connect math to real-world settings through STEAM, literacy, music, and more.

This grade-level strand will guide participants through engaging lessons, activities, and assessments to address the AZCCRS-M within the focus of the day. Be sure to choose “Grades K-2” for your grade-level strand on the next page.
