Audacity is widely-used software for recording, editing, and exporting audio. It's widely-used because it's free and there are versions for Macintosh, Linux, and Windows computers. Audacity is often used by podcasters as it provides a great way to create an audio show. It's easy to record voices and add music and sound effects. The hardest part might be downloading and installing the software. Audacity is free, so if you are asked to pay for it, you've clicked the wrong link. You can download Audacity from audacity.sourceforge.net,.
To help teachers and students get started with Audacity, I've created a screencast. A screencast is a recording of a computer's screen with narration. A screencast allows me to demonstrate exactly how to use Audacity as if I were making a live presentation. As the viewer, you can pause, rewind, and fast forward to meet your needs. I'll write more about screencasting in the future. For now, you can view the screencast below, titled "Using Audacity." The video is 16 minutes in length.
Audio is fun and can be a great addition to the classroom. Teachers and students can record poetry, book reviews, science and math explanations, and so much more. Please share your ideas for using Audacity in the classroom by leaving a comment.
